There are great examples from the 80’s which are now in their prime drinking window. A rare six-litre Imperial of 1983 Ducru Beaucaillou is outstanding and awarded 94pts by John Gillman in September 2020 stating “one of the finest wines of the vintage on either side of the Gironde…long, complex and seamless..”

The trio of 85’s are superb with the Double-Magnums of Leoville Las Cases (a personal favourite) recently awarded 98pts by Vinous.  The two six-litre Imperials are equally impressive, the seductive and charming Margaux and was awarded 18/20 by Jancis Robinson in 2019. James Suckling called the 85 Mouton “a Bordeaux with soul and remarkable complexity. Sensational” (99pts, Oct 2015). Completing the 80’s are two Double-Magnums with an exceptionally rare 88 Petrus described by Jancis Robinson as “sweet, round and rich”(18.5pts) and 89 Lafite awarded 98pts by Decanter in 2018 “beautiful, rich.. elegant and sculpted..”.

Two ultra-rare and amazing six-litre Imperials from the 1990’s with 1990 La Mission Haut Brion. Neil Martin in the Wine Advocate stated “this is a glorious La Mission.. I think it is going to get even better” (97+ July 2016). The 1998 Haut Brion Blanc is “opulent, sweet and juicy..gets you going back for sip after sip” (94pts Wine Cellar Insider, Nov 2018). Finally, the quintet of four Imperials and one five-litre Jeroboam from the revered 2000 vintage. Cheval Blanc in Imperial and Mouton in Jeroboam are both legendary wines and in these formats, I suspect they will just get better, though temptation may preclude further cellaring. Cos d’Estournel in Imperial(94pts Neil Martin, Oct 2018) is just starting on its drinking plateau. A rare six-litre bottleof Valandraud is “deeply impressive and an outstanding millennial St. Emilion” (95pts Wine Advocate, 2017). The Imperial of Palmer shows great finesse, though make no mistake, it is rich, complex and powerful (96pts Decanter, 2020).
