Montrachet, Chevalier, Batard & Bienvenues-Batard
These vineyards situated in the villages of Puligny and Chassagne Montrachet are without doubt the world’s greatest white wine terroir. Both Chevalier and Bienvenues-Batard Montrachet lie entirely within the village of Puligny, along with around half of Montrachet and Batard Montrachet which are shared with the neighbouring village of Chassagne.
As ever, it is easy to generalise, that said the wines produced from the vineyard Montrachet are the ultimate and most sought after expression of Chardonnay. Deep, powerful, concentrated and complex, Montrachet is multi-layered and deserves some ageing. Chevalier, upslope from Montrachet is a little smaller covering just over 7.3ha. If it doesn’t quite reach the complexity and intensity of Montrachet, it is wonderfully harmonious marrying power with elegance.
Batard, the largest of the four at just over 11ha lies across the road from Montrachet and tends to be rich, full and fat. Bienvenues-Batard covers just over 3.6ha and is essentially the north-east quarter of Batard Montrachet. The wines are seductively perfumed and though less powerful, they tend to work on grace and finesse.
